Barátta indjána

Rosalie Little Thunder í Dakota er baráttukona fyrir verndun buffalósins í Yellowstone þjóðgarðinum, sem og náttúruvernd. En indjánar þurfa víða að berjast fyrir landi sínum og tilveru enn í dag. Þetta segir hún um fátækt sem er algeng á meðal hennar fólks:

"Local leadership(...)have this attitude that poverty is a choice. People treat it like a choice. “Well, those people. Those people.” Poverty to me is very deliberate. It’s imposed. It’s by design. Our reservations are the poorest counties in the nation. And right across the border in Nebraska is the wealthiest county in the nation. Something is very deliberate about that.

A foundation called me one time for a gathering, “We’re trying to figure out the root causes of poverty, and to develop programs to address the root causes of poverty.” I told him, “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to bring me in to help you figure that out. The root cause of poverty is wealth. What can you do about that?” The disparity between wealth and poverty is pretty obvious."

Um verndun buffalósins:

"They are sacred to us. They are a sacred species. Scientists will agree with that because they’re keystone species. They’re very key to the ecosystems in which they live. Most sacred species of the indigenous people are keystone species: the buffalo, the bear, the salmon. Different kinds of plant species, like the cedar or redwood [trees]."

Sæl. Flott athugasemd. Buffalóar eru stórkostlegar skepnur. Mig hefur alltaf dreymt um að sjá þessar skepnur, augliti til auglitis. Það verður einhvern daginn. Saga indjánanna er mikilfengleg og ætti að gera þeim miklu betri skil í sögu bandaríkjanna. Hvernig þeir lifðu og komust af í hörðum vetrum og annað er mikil saga.

takk já saga þeirra er flott fyrir utan það hvernig aðkomumenn tóku á þeim í flestum tilvikum.
